Exploring Thailand’s Leading Hubs of Agricultural Technology & Sustainability
From 10–11 November 2025, students, faculty, and staff from the Agribusiness Management (ABM) and Agricultural Systems and Engineering (ASE) programs at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) embarked on an immersive two-day field trip across Thailand. The purpose: to witness firsthand how innovation, technology, and research are reshaping the agricultural landscape and advancing sustainable development across the country.
🚜 Stop 1: Chia Tai Experience Center, Chachoengsao
The journey began at the Chia Tai Experience Center, a learning hub dedicated to modern farming and crop improvement. Here, participants had the opportunity to see how Thailand is elevating rice production using cutting-edge research and precision agriculture.
Demonstrations showcased:
- Crop improvement programs designed to boost productivity and resilience
- Smart farming tools including drones for field monitoring and mapping
- Auto-steering tractors that reduce labor while maximizing efficiency
For many students, it was a transformative moment — a realization of how traditional agriculture can evolve with digital tools and scientific advancement.
🔬 Stop 2: Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation (EECi), Rayong
The second destination led the group to Rayong and into the heart of Thailand’s innovation ecosystem — the Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation (EECi). Known for being a catalyst for high-tech research, EECi offered a glimpse into how science is elevating agribusiness potential.
During the visit, participants explored:
- Biorefinery processes that convert biomass into high-value products
- Plant phenomics research supporting crop improvement
- Smart greenhouse systems designed for precision-controlled production
The experience highlighted Thailand’s proactive efforts to integrate science, technology, and entrepreneurship — creating new pathways for agribusiness growth and innovation. EECi’s collaborative model, which supports innovators and product developers through contract-based access to facilities and co-development services, further illustrated how ideas can scale into commercially viable agricultural solutions.
🍜 Stop 3: Thai President Foods, Chonburi
The next leg of the journey took the team to Thai President Foods, home to the beloved Mama instant noodles. Inside the state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, students observed every stage of the production process—from raw materials to final packaging.
Key takeaways included:
- Highly automated production lines
- Strict adherence to safety and quality control
- Efficiency-driven systems ensuring consistency across mass production
This visit offered a deeper appreciation of how industrial standards and innovation in manufacturing play a critical role in ensuring food quality, safety, and global competitiveness.
🍉 Stop 4: Nichcha Charm Smart Farm
The final stop brought the group to Nichcha Charm Smart Farm, a forward-thinking operation showcasing the power of data-driven agriculture. With watermelons as its primary crop, the farm integrates smart monitoring, value chain management, and sustainable farming practices to maximize output and minimize resource use.
Participants engaged in discussions on:
- Using data to enhance crop performance
- Sustainable production techniques
- Integrating farm operations with value chain strategies
The visit reinforced how modern agribusiness models can successfully combine profitability with environmental responsibility.
Reflections from the Field
Across two days and four innovative sites, the field trip delivered far more than academic insight. It provided inspiration — demonstrating how research, innovation, and technology are redefining the future of agriculture, from seed development to supply chain scaling.
Students returned with a renewed perspective on the possibilities that lie ahead in agricultural systems, engineering, and agribusiness. The experience strengthened their readiness to contribute to a sector undergoing rapid transformation
The ASE and ABM programs extend heartfelt thanks to Chia Tai Experience Center, EECi, Thai President Foods, and Nichcha Charm Smart Farm for their warm hospitality and generous knowledge-sharing. Their collaboration made this learning journey both impactful and memorable.
